Easter Egg at work

Despite being a holiday weekend we ended up picking on Saturday. It wasn’t great to be picking in the middle of the long weekend but at least everyone was in a relaxed, laid back kind of mood. To make it even better we were picking Granny Smith – a big apple that is all just plain green. It’s not exactly hard to fill your bin when you hardly even need to look at the apples and so I had 3 bins before lunchtime. In the middle of the morning we all stopped together for an official Smoko (thats how they … Continue reading

Easter Trip

Today all the pickers from the Orchard had the day off work for Good Friday and we all decided to take a day trip together. F. picked me up from home early in the morning and took us to Irongate to pick up the Vanuatu boys. We had intended to squeeze everyone into the van but with the new backpackers we needed an extra car and I ended up going with the South Americans and the Irishman in their car. Despite the weather starting to get a little cold, we all headed off to one of the local beaches – … Continue reading

Poker Night in Hastings

Yesterday I went with friends to a local bar that runs poker tournaments in the evening. They all expected me to play (I had of course profited $8 playing online already!) but at first I declined. Once the game got started though I found out that standing around watching poker is actually rather boring. I watched for a while and then had a chat with the guy behind the bar. Once the first few people were out I found someone to play some billiards with. The guy running the tournaments came and found me and tried to convince me to … Continue reading

Birthday Barbecue

Working on Saturday makes the weekend so short! It was still a good one anyway – I got lots done in the afternoon yesterday and tonight a German couple, who are colleagues in the orchard, visited for dinner. It was H’s birthday and we cooked a nice barbecue with fresh baked bread, rabbit, veggies, cheese and salad. We even got to light the brazier once it got dark and we sat around talking and having a few drinks. C. stopped by as well and we all discussed the differences between NZ and Germany. We talked about the bureaucracy in Germany … Continue reading

My first try in Poker

Last night I went and visited J. Everyone there was sitting down in front of a computer playing poker. After watching for a while I got bored and decided that it was my turn to play. I jumped on a spare laptop, made someone give me an account to use, and started playing my first online poker games! I played three $1.10 games and came out with a profit of about $8 – not too bad for a beginner! It did mean that I had played until almost the end though and didn’t finish and go home until after 1 … Continue reading

Job hunting again

On Monday and Tuesday there was only juice picking. I don’t like it and the pay is pretty bad, so I took two more days off. I spent some of the time off job hunting, but after my first applications weren’t even answered I don’t have much hope. Harry got a trip to the garage to get his WOF check done as well – he needs a new tire and a small part on the front suspension. The tire shouldn’t be too expensive and very easy to replace. C.’s man N. is going to help me with the broken part … Continue reading

Fishing and collecting Pipis

Two days off after a long week working in agriculture – great! My career improved – on Thursday I packed pears all day and on Friday I weeded a big field of vegetables in an organic farm. It wasn’t too hard plus I got paid on hours which worked out better than picking has been. Getting 15 minute paid breaks in the morning and afternoon didn’t hurt either. C.’s little son J. had his 4th birthday today and instead of a birthday party he got a fishing trip to Mahia. I was also invited and luckily didn’t have to work. … Continue reading

Bed time

I managed to get two bonus bins of apples, plus I got given an hour’s wage for time we had to spend all doing a row of apples together because one of the bosses missed it. All up I earned $107.50 before tax – I’m trying to ignore the fact that it’s half of nothing. It’s a hard life these days ;o) Shot another rabbit, either it’ll end up on the barbecue or I can trade it for some other meat. Nothing against rabbit, it is very tasty, but everyday? I wouldn’t mind some change of meat in the menu.
