Giant rock marbles, penguins, seals and a couple of hundred sheep

Today we went to the Moeraki Boulders. We walked along the beach to the boulders and were annoyed with all the tourists – they kept getting in the way of my photos! I finally got the shots that I wanted and we went back to the tourist information center. We read some information about the boulders and other local attractions. On the way back to the car we stopped to pat a deer with a weird big head.

We read in the guidebook about Lighthouse Road not far from the boulders and so we went exploring. The road was gravel and had a sign at the start „No Tour Buses“ – both very promising. At the end of the road was a little wooden lighthouse, we walked by and climbed a fence to get onto the peninsula. Halfway through the field we saw a Yellow Eyed Penguin sitting in the long grass. I took lots of pictures, he didn’t even seem to recognize, probably I could have touched him – crazy. Further on we got to the edge of the hill only to see five more penguins sitting around the fence at the bottom. They seemed to be just chilling out and standing either side of the pathway like they were having a cigarette and saying „hey“ to people as they walked past – unbelievable.

Who needs expensive tourist boats or nature trips when you can have everything for free. You just need to find a good place! The peninsula was definitely a perfect place – not even one tourist, the huge waves crashing into the cliffs, penguins and seals.
We enjoyed the fantastic nature for a while and watched the locals fishing. On our way back I wanted another picture of me between the seals. Unfortunately one of the seals didn’t want more photo shooting and chased us. Fortunately they are not very fast on land, so we could escape easily.

In the evening I skyped with my dad, he was very happy to hear that I’m out of the city and again enjoy my trip. I had drunk a couple of glasses of wine with dinner and had a couple more while talking. I think I will have a very good sleep tonight!
